Cash and jewellery worth Rs 65 lakh stolen from Jharkhand recovered in Patna

PATNA: Acting on a tip off, Patna police recovered cash, gold and diamond jewelleries worth at least Rs 65 lakh stolen from residence of a businessman Bharatia from Sahebganj in Jhankhand from Sandalpur under Bahadurpur police station in the city on Sunday.
Police also arrested one Kumari (18) who had stolen the booty from the businessman‘s residence who owns a petrol pump and also is a cement dealer. Bahadurpur police station SHO said that Rani was working as a maid at Bharatia‘s residence from at least last one year.

“On December 28, she gave juice mixed with sedatives to Bharatia and his wife following which they fell asleep for several hours. Rani stole Rs 35 lakh kept inside a locker along with jewellery worth around Rs 30 lakh by opening it. She had used the key which was kept below Bharatiya‘s bed who was fast asleep,” the SHO said.

He said that the maid, after the incident immediately flew from and reached Patna where she took shelter at her sister Devi‘s rented accommodation in Bahadurpur area.

He said that Rani was arrested by police. “Pinki and the house owner Sunil Kumar were being quizzed in connection with the incident as it is highly impossible that a maid would steal money and jewelleries from a businessman‘s house by sedating them on her own,” the SHO said.

He said that that an FIR was lodged with the Town police station in Sahebganj district on December 29 in connection with the incident and a team of Jharkhand police would soon reach Patna for further investigation.

SHO Gupta said that the maid Rani, who lives in Sahebganj, had earlier also stolen Rs 6 lakh from the locker of the businessman but no one suspected her involvement. “The maid‘s involvement surfaced only after the couple got to know that Rs 3 lakh was deposited in her account soon after the theft. They pressurised Rani after which she accepted her involvement and even returned Rs 1 lakh,” Gupta said. He said in lieu of returning rest amount, Rani borrowed some time and in between fled Patna with cash and jewellery worth around Rs 65 lakh.
