Recruitment spree to strengthen services

BHUBANESWAR: The (), Bhubaneswar, has issued appointment letters to 72 people to join as faculty. Besides treating patients, they will teach students and conduct research on their respective subjects. The institute currently has 131 faculty members — professors, additional professors, associate professors and assistant professors — and around 150 senior and junior resident doctors.
The faculty strength will touch 203 after the new recruits join, said P K , deputy director (administration) of AIIMS, Bhubaneswar. Among the 72, five will join as professors by the end of January. Their appointment will help the departments of gastroenterology, medical oncology, paediatric surgery, dermatology and general surgery. People face a lot of problems due to paucity of doctors. They have to stand in queue in front of the outpatient department (OPD). Sometimes, doctors don‘t allow patients beyond a certain limit in the .

“A doctor in the neurology OPD allows 60 patients per day. The rest have to wait for their turn. The new recruits can ease the pressure on OPD services,” a senior professor of the institute said. Ray said the appointments would not only help students, they would create an opportunity for the institute to start PG courses. “We could not start the courses because of faculty crunch. We can now start the courses in 10 departments,” he added. The institute has also started the process of appointing 1,212 group-D employees and 920 nurses. It will complete the process by the end of March next year. After this, the institute will add 500 beds. “We could not increase the number of beds due to lack of nursing staff and group-D employees,” said the officer.
