Two people, including a young child, died in a Saturday afternoon crash on Interstate 684 in Bedford, New York State Police said.
Kerry Hamill, a 40-year-old Massachusetts woman, and a 3-year-old passenger were killed when a box truck driver lost control and slammed into their car which was stopped in traffic just south of exit 4.
Another passenger, Hamill‘s wife, Lauren Pellegrino, was rushed to Westchester Medical Center, where she was treated for minor injuries.
The box truck driver, a 59-year-old Bronx man, couldn‘t stop because of the icy road conditions, according to state police.
The collision started a chain reaction that involved four other cars, state police said. The occupants of those cars were treated at area hospitals for minor injuries.
The snow wreaked havoc on I-684 for most of the day.
While the snowfall only amounted to a dusting — and only an inch or two is predicted for the region — a slew of minor accidents both northbound and southbound slowed traffic to a crawl at various points during the morning from Armonk all the way north to the Westchester-Putnam county line.
State police said there were a number of accidents blocking lanes, but declined to give details on any single one. Most were described as small, fender bender-type accidents.
